Announcing July’s Design Challenge Themes

Ice Cream Truck | Entries due by June 23

Chocolate covered faces and sticky fingers come to mind when thinking about warm summer visits to the neighborhood ice cream truck. A joyful sign of the season, they make their rounds serving the sweetest of treats to kids of all ages. In this week’s challenge, we are looking for designs inspired by the nostalgic melodies, frozen novelties, and sprints down the street that accompany the arrival of the Ice Cream Truck.

Here’s the scoop: Challenge results will be revealed just in time for National Ice Cream Day celebrations in July, so whip together a colorfully cute repeating pattern being careful to avoid logos and brands in your designs. We can’t wait to see what you churn up!

Entries will be previewed on a 21” x 18” fat quarter. Submissions close June 23 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins June 25. Winners will be announced July 2. See official rules.

Aromatherapy | Entries due by June 30

Our recommended cure for a long day? Light a lavender candle, drop your favorite essential oil in a diffuser and step into a warm, bubbly eucalyptus bath. Close your eyes, relax and breathe in the essence of flowers, leaves, barks, and roots that can promote well-being, brighten moods, and encourage better sleep. In this week’s Aromatherapy Design Challenge, look to the healing properties of plants in their natural form or in the aromatic products they can become. Consider the tranquil and calm environment these fragrances can create when choosing color and composition.

Entries will be previewed on a 21” x 18” fat quarter. Submissions close June 30 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins July 2. Winners will be announced July 9. See official rules.

Brightly-Colored Reptiles | Entries due by July 7

From slithering snakes to captivating crocodiles, lizards, chameleons, and turtles too, this week’s design challenge celebrates the Reptilia class, but with a colorful twist. Put those neutral shades away and break out your best bright, bold palette for this one! While many reptiles can be a bit frightening for some, your design should showcase a fun and whimsical take on our scaly, ectothermic friends in a design that could be perfect for a variety of applications from garment sewing to wallpaper and home decor.

Entries will be previewed on a roll of Spoonflower wallpaper. Submissions close July 7 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins July 9. Winners will be announced July 16. See official rules.

Day at the Lake | Entries due by July 14

No matter the season, this Day at the Lake Design Challenge prompt is the perfect opportunity to showcase your style and the playful fun one might have next to a body of freshwater. From fishing motifs and water sports (or even ice skating!) to boating and summer camp traditions, your task is to invoke the feeling of the great outdoors with your unique repeating pattern. While planning your layout, think of how your fabric design could be used, be it on cabin bedding, a s’mores supply bag, or even a picnic blanket under the sun.

Entries will be previewed on a 21” x 18” fat quarter. Submissions close July 14  at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins July 16. Winners will be announced July 23. See official rules.

Tropical Surrealism Wallpaper | Entries due by July 21

This week’s Tropical Surrealism Wallpaper Design Challenge takes a dip into the subconscious mind where paradise meets surreal landscapes bound only by your imagination. With a focus on lush plants, colorful flowers, or animals found in tropical climates, designers should incorporate an element of surprise where dream-like possibilities are the norm and constraints of reality are banished. While you conceptualize your masterpiece, think of what kind of room your wallpaper design could be used for it—maybe a child’s bedroom, a posh cocktail bar, or even a maximalist lover’s living room.

Entries will be previewed on a roll of Spoonflower wallpaper. Submissions close July 21  at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins July 23. Winners will be announced July 30. See official rules.
