Reminisce of a Crafter: Season 2, Episode 11: Cakes Tales #WhisperingCakes

Anino writes about her inspiration on animating cakes and designing a cake game.

It is Spring Season, and the blossoms are in the air. Today, I am having a cake tasting appointment with my friend, Folake.

Folake is a professional baker and sugarcrafter. Sometimes when she is testing out some new recipes, or wants a different view towards her project, she calls me.

I do annoy her sometimes as she does the same to me, but that is what friends are for, “to inconvenience and convenience one another or each other” that is my phrase or quote to her.

I opened my window to let some spring blossom in. The sweet smell of the cherry blossom and magnolia filled the air.

I dressed in a dark-grey coloured knitted gown and wrapped a coordinating coloured neck scarf around my neck since the weather was a bit chilly, and then set off for Folake’s Studio/ bakery.

Folake was already there working in her conservatory. Hmmm! An early riser.

We exchanged pleasantries and I headed towards her garden.

I decided to enjoy the weather, I sat on a sofa in the garden and allowed the spring blossoms to embrace me as they swirl and twirl in the wind.

Folake came towards me holding some plain paper, books and pencils.

She sat opposite me, and then she started sketching /designing. She designed a variety of cakes, and then taking out her sketchbook she named each one separately.

She drew the cakes and then coloured them. I made tags (like flashcards) from each of the cake designs so that her customers could have a look.

Later, we went inside the studio/bakery to make cakes. The sponge cake flavour was thesame with the icing to be used- an orange cake with an orange icing. She used natural fruits, no artificial flavour and colouring. I marvelled at her meticulous ways of baking and handling the ingredients.

She looked at the pattern of a dress and replicated it on a cake. It was as if the cake was of the same brand as the dress.

She proceeded to make the cakes that I was ready to taste (my speciality is eating but not savouring… haahaaha).

As I took a bite from each of the cakes that were filled with flavour and texture, I felt this exciting kind of sensation piercing through me. It was like an arrow in the hand of the mighty. I enjoyed every bite and kept craving more than my palate could contain. It was as if the cakes were whispering to me.

I will tell you about the different sponge cakes in later tales.

I sat down and started designing some cakes with graphics software. It was all fun until I had this idea of turning it into a game and animation, and then I knew it was now a job for me.

I put the idea of creating a cake game to work, and after that, I knew that I had to design a cake every day and export the design as game objects into my game. I was first excited about the idea.

I also had an idea of animating different cakes. I wanted to convey my experience using animation.

Folake packed some cakes into transparent boxes for me. She tied each box with a ribbon and included a small card with sentiments to appreciate the memory we created today. Each cake has a different sentiment on its card. There was also a tag with the type of cake and ingredients incase of allergy.

As I took my leave, I looked at her display shelves, it was as if I should carry all the cakes with me to my home.
