Frida Kahlo’s portrait has become an iconic image in crafts. You see it so often you almost don’t look twice.

And yet one part of her family, the side that controls the Frida Kahlo Corporation, has become highly protective of her name and image, filing takedown notices on sites like Etsy and Spoonflower to protect their trademark.

So can you use Frida Kahlo’s name and image in crafts you make to sell? 

Mexican artist Frida Kahlo would perhaps be appalled to know that crafters who pay loving homage to her with their creative artwork are seeing their products yanked off of e-commerce sites like Etsy and Spoonflower. The reason for this recent flurry of problems stems from copyright infringement notices that are being issued by the excessively litigious Frida Kahlo Corporation (FKC).
