Announcing February’s Design Challenge Themes
- Coral Limited Color Palette | Entries due by January 29:
Once a year the color experts at Pantone proclaim a color of the year and it’s safe to say we’re smitten with their 2019 pick: Living Coral. The vibrant yet mellow shade of coral brings a renewed sense of energy and warmth to all that it touches. When creating your design, think about the ways the Spoonflower maker community might be incorporating the color of the year into their space. Download an ASE file of the Living Coral color palette to get started.
Limited Color Palette
Goldenrod (#E0B138), Midnight Blue (#002E54), Coral (#FA7268 – ASE Color of the Year hex code), Gray (#D9D9D6).
- All four colors in the palette above need to be included in your design.
- Color variations and colors outside of this palette will not be accepted.
- Unlike past limited color palette challenges, black and white may not be used.
- To prevent colors from shifting when uploading to Spoonflower, designs must be in the sRGB color space. Please do not create your design in CMYK.
Entries will be previewed at the fat quarter size: 21” x 18”. Submissions close January 29 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins January 31. Winners will be announced February 7. See official rules.
- Desert Modernism with Modern Phoenix | Entries due by February 5
The desert southwest has inspired generations of architects, fashion designers and graphic artists to complement its wild spirit. This week we’ve partnered with Modern Phoenix and Spoonflower maker, Sarah Marsom of the Tiny Activist Project, to help discover the next generation of modern designers and celebrate Modern Phoenix Week. As you create your repeating pattern, remember to showcase the spirit of the desert through sleek, colorful and chic motifs. Design challenge bonus! This week’s winning design will be the featured fabric for the DIY Pillow Workshop during Modern Phoenix Week.
Entries will be previewed at the fat quarter size: 21” x 18”. Submissions close February 5 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins February 7. Winners will be announced February 14. See official rules.
- Pysanky | Entries due by February 12
This week we’re focusing on the intricate details found on Pysanky, one of the many styles of Ukrainian eggs. Pysanka comes from the verb pysaty, which means “to write”, and unlike eggs you might dye around Easter, Pysanky come to life as artists decorate the eggs with a wax-resist method. The end result is a beautiful batik design. As you create your pysanka inspired repeating pattern, remember to take cues from the traditional design elements you’ll find on these beauties: folk motifs, geometric patterns and intricate line work. Entries will be previewed at the fat quarter size: 21” x 18”. Submissions close February 12 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins February 14. Winners will be announced February 21. See official rules.
- Bohemian Paradise | Entries due by February 19
Close your eyes and picture yourself in a tropical oasis. Do you see oversized palm leaves swaying in the breeze or bold pops of color from the flora like Birds of Paradise? This week, we’re challenging you to create a repeating design that will ignite bold patterns and opulent plant life. Entries will be previewed at the fat quarter size: 21” x 18”. Submissions close February 19 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins February 21. Winners will be announced February 28. See official rules.
