Announcing February’s Design Challenge Themes

Classic Blue Limited Color Palette | Entries due by January 28

We’re looking ahead to 2020 with blue-tinted vision inspired by Pantone’s timeless and serene pick for Color of the Year.

The much-anticipated announcement is finally here and designers and makers alike are rejoicing for the calming hue celebrating the coming year: Classic Blue.

Using just the monochromatic limited color palette below, we can’t wait to see how you shine a spotlight on this year’s confident color.

Colour Palette: #E9F4FF, #92BOCA, #0F4C81, #012E54

Ice (#E9F4FF), Slate (#92B0CA), Classic Blue #0F4C81–ASE Color of the Year hex code), Midnight (#012E54)

  • All four colors in the palette above need to be included in your design.
  • Color variations and colors outside of this palette will not be accepted.
  • Unlike past limited color palette challenges, black and white may not be used
  • To prevent colors from shifting when uploading to Spoonflower, designs must be in the sRGB color space. Please do not create your design in CMYK.

Entries will be previewed on a fat quarter size: 21” x 18”. Submissions close January 28 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins January 30. Winners will be announced February 6.

Illustrated Spring Flora and Fauna | Entries due by February 4

Back in December, you helped us choose the theme for this week’s Design Challenge in an Instagram Story poll. The votes have been counted and the results are in!

The snow and ice are melting and new life is beginning to blossom—springtime is just around the corner for our friends in the northern hemisphere. Celebrate the flora and fauna that arrives when warmer weather is around with designs that illustrate the natural beauty of the season. Put away your photographs and realism for this challenge, we want you to brush off your illustration skills to add your own style to the buds, blossoms and baby animals that come to life each spring.

With this week’s challenge comes a twist! Every week, Spoonflower employees watch from the sidelines as you, our creative community, participate in the weekly design challenges. For one week out of the year, the roles are reversed and employees step off the sidelines and onto the design field to create a design for the annual employee design challenge. This year, employees will participate alongside the Spoonflower designer community in the Illustrated Spring Flora and Fauna Design Challenge–but don’t worry–there’s no home team advantage here.

Entries will be previewed on a fat quarter size: 21” x 18”. Submissions close February 4 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins February 6. Winners will be announced February 13.

Animalier | Entries due by February 11

Like much of the art world, the animalier movement of 19th century Europe took inspiration from the majestic animal kingdom. For this challenge, we’re looking for dark, moody exotic animals with luxe textures that pop on fabric, wallpaper and home decor. Don’t be afraid to channel your inner maximalist and pattern mix with florals and unexpected details to make your design come to life.

Entries will be previewed on a fat quarter size: 21” x 18”. Submissions close February 11 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins February 13. Winners will be announced February 20.

Roller Rink Nostalgia | Entries due by February 18

Pull up your multi-colored tube socks and lace up your skates (or your blades!), we’re giving this party a vintage flair for our Roller Rink Nostalgia Design Challenge. If disco dancing on wheels and the glow of neon lights is your idea of a Saturday night well spent, then we want to see your best repeating pattern that celebrates the retro aesthetic of this classic pastime.

Entries will be previewed on a fat quarter size: 21” x 18”. Submissions close February 18 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins February 20. Winners will be announced February 27.
