But Sara Davies, the newbie on BBC hit Dragons’ Den, uses unpaid labour to bolster her business.

Critics say her firm Crafter’s Companion takes advantage of people who create items showcasing what it sells, by paying in “freebies and discounts”.

One said: “Considering she’s worth £35million, she doesn’t pay her sample makers, apart from in kind. Some of her design team members don’t get paid and there is a long list of things expected from them, which take many hours to fulfil.

An ad for Crafter’s Companion offers designers a “generous welcome package and other benefits including free craft supplies and a discount to our website”.

Sara, who replaces Jenny Campbell in the show, said: “Crafter’s Companion’s Design Team is a community of people who are passionate about their hobby.”

In return, they received “hundreds of pounds of product” and discounts.
