Announcing May’s Design Challenge Themes

  • East Fork Design Challenge | Entries due by April 28

Inspired by 5 a.m. surf sessions in Malibu and 6 p.m. bonfires on Dockweiler State Beach, the Spring/Summer 2020 East Fork collection was designed to bring a warming glow to your home and call attention to sunrises and sunsets of your own past and present. To help celebrate the launch of East Fork’s collection colors Malibu and Tequila Sunrise, we’re challenging the Spoonflower community to create a repeating pattern that perfectly pairs with this iconic ceramic dinnerware. But there’s a twist! Create your own color palette featuring at least one of the two collection colors listed below as the main color* in your design. As you get started on your design, remember to think about how someone might pair your design on a placemat or tea towel with their coveted East Fork mug or plate.

*Let the East Fork collection colors shine! At least 50-60% of your design should feature Malibu or Tequila Sunrise.

East Fork Spring/Summer 2020 Collection Colors: Malibu (#ACCACD) or Tequila Sunrise (#F7C995)

Entries will be previewed on a 21” x 18” fat quarter. Submissions close April 28 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins April 30. Winners will be announced May 7.

  • Designs for Good | Entries due by May 5

Inspired by our Made for Good campaign, during this week’s challenge we would like to celebrate all of our designers by making a commitment to goodness. Behind every product we sell is a spirit and a story and we’re shining a light on the causes that mean the most to you. We’re challenging you to create a repeating design inspired by a cause that is close to your heart. From raising autism awareness to creating food security in your local community, we want to know what inspires you every day. Now more than ever, our community can come together to lift others up.

*Please note: Charity logos and trademarks may not be used in this challenge.*

In addition to our weekly prizes, Spoonflower will make a $200 donation to the winning designer’s non-profit organization of choice.

Entries will be previewed on a 21” x 18” fat quarter. Submissions close May 5 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins May 7. Winners will be announced May 14.

  • Bioluminescence | Entries due by May 12

What do organisms like flies, fungus and fish have in common? They all share the scientific super power of bioluminescence! Jellyfish produce bright flashes of light to deter predators, swarms of plankton create pinpoints of light that make bodies of water glow, and fireflies rival street lights for light sources on summer nights. This chemical reaction is both fascinating and beautiful and we can’t wait to see which of the thousands of glowing friends you decide to highlight in your design. Because these printed designs won’t actually light up the night, the challenge this week will be using high contrast and color choice to create the illusion of the enchanting glow of bioluminescence.

Entries will be previewed on a 21” x 18” fat quarter. Submissions close May 12 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins May 14. Winners will be announced May 21.

  • Off the Wall Toile | Entries due by May 19

Traditionally, Toile de Jouy, or toile, refers to a decorative pattern that depicts intricate scenes one might discover in rural living. From a field of blooming flowers to a band of children off on an adventure, these two-toned illustrated designs have maintained popularity across textiles and wallpaper alike.

For this week’s Off the Wall Toile wallpaper challenge, we’re looking to our design community to spin this classic style upside down to create a modern and imaginative approach to toile one would only find at Spoonflower. Your scene could portray anything from a faraway galaxy to a contemporary day at the beach and more. Just remember, when you upload your wallpaper, be sure to give shoppers clues as to what hides within your design by using descriptive titles and tags.

Entries will be previewed on a roll of Spoonflower wallpaper. Submissions close May 19 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. Voting begins May 21. Winners will be announced May 28.
